Chinese New Year 2024 - The Year of the Dragon begins with celebrations and traditions

The Chinese zodiac calendar is best described as a 12-year cycle represented by 12 different animals: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig.

This year marks the onset of the "Year of the Dragon," a period associated with luck, courage, and prosperity according to Chinese astrology.

In cities around the world, festivities are getting ready to honour Chinese New Year, celebrated on the first day of the Chinese lunar calendar. 

Some Fun Facts about Chinese New Year 2024 and the Year of the Dragon:


     1.     Celebration Date: Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, falls between January 21 and February 20, depending on the lunar calendar. This  year Chinese New Year will be celebrated on February 10

     2.     Dragon Years: the Year of the Dragon occurs once every 12 years. Previous Dragon years were 2012, 2000, 1988, and so on.

     3.     Symbol of Luck: In Chinese culture, the dragon is considered a symbol of luck, prosperity, and strength. Individuals born in the Year of the Dragon are often seen as confident and intelligent.

     4.     Traditional Customs: Families come together to clean their homes, exchange red envelopes with lucky money, and share festive meals. Fireworks, dragon dances, and colourful lanterns are part of the traditional celebrations.

     5.     Closure with the Lantern Festival: Chinese New Year concludes with the Lantern Festival on the fifteenth day, characterized by beautiful lantern displays, parades, and traditional treats.
